Teaching the Heart what the Mind Knows
Teaching the Heart what the Mind Knows
As I embark on my next half-century, I’m realizing that I’ve done a lot of the ‘thought-work’ I’d like have done in my life. That is – analytical theorizing on the various philosophical concepts, or truths, as they may be.
This next phase of life, however, seems to be about forming an emotional connection to discern which of these potential truths resonate with me and with my personal experience. I think of this as the process of moving the truths of the MInd into becoming the truths of the Heart. Where those concepts from my conscious, or ‘book’ understanding of existence move into the subconscious, which fills in the gaps within our perception of reality. Deeper still, into the unconscious, which holds the symbolic meaning with which we experience reality – a symbolic language played back to our conscious mind in dreams.
It’s taken me 50 years, bringing my ideas into the Couldron of the self (to reference the I Ching) in order to realize that holding something as an intellectual truth (a truth of the Mind) is separate from the process of bringing it into being an emotional truth (a truth of the Heart) – and maybe bringing those into union is the alchemy that is needed to realize it as a spiritual truth (a truth of the Soul).
